How to mouse proof a house
Mouse proofing in London is often required because builders and kitchen fitters did not take the care of sealing existing gaps around the pipework or at skirting board level. Leaving so many gaps open will in due time allow mice or possibly rats to come in your home.
Since we cannot control what takes place around our home, we sometime have no other choice but protecting our home from what take place around it. Such approach is easy to understand with crime. We cannot stop criminals from walking our streets, but we can keep them out of our homes by keeping all doors and windows shut.
So when you notice mice activity, we carry out the treatment as to take care of the problem that already took hold in your home. But to stop from more mice affecting you in the immediate future, you would need to block 100% of the access points throughout the home as to leave them no alternative entry points.
To mouse proof your house, you could have a builder removing the kitchen, sealing all gaps/holes perfectly at wall and floor level, and putting back the old kitchen, or better a new one. The issue with this approach is the very high cost involved possibly a few thousands. More so, in case the builder overlooked 1 hole, or that mice create a new hole, you would be left with no other alternative than repeating the whole operation?
We normally advise our client that is they are planning to refurbish the kitchen, it is best to have the builder doing the mouse proofing. But otherwise it is more economical and more efficient to have us doing it.
For rodent proofing your home you should never use expanding foam as mice will be able to chew through it, so it will at best offer you a short/mid term solution. Also many of our competitors use it as it is cheap and quick to implement. But the reality is that foam is not a magic bullet and it will often not expend enough to cover at the back of the pipework, or that holes at the back of the units higher up will be overlooked.
Mice proofing a room
The rodent proofing materials we use are very much limited to wirewool, sealant, hardboard, timber, mesh, composite metal plates and draught excluder. They are hardwearing as to stop mice and allow a clean finish that allow an easy visual inspection/quality control. The same materials are also used for rat proofing and to mouse proof kitchen cabinets.
You can also mouse proof storage and bin chamber areas in most cases. Ideally, to mouse proof use wire mesh with a section equal or smaller than 0.5cm. A hole or gap of 0.5cm would be too small for any mice to go through. This is why we often use the pencil standard to test gaps/holes. If the pencil goes through, then the gaps need to be sealed in such a way that the pencil would fit no more.
At inoculand we mouse proof at living space level sealing any gaps that would allow any mice from coming in from the void spaces underneath the floorboards or within the walls. It present great advantage as the clients can double check with their own eyes that are no gaps left.
